Summary The Security Assistant serves in the Human Resources
Personnel Security Unit (PSU), Department of Veterans Affairs,
(VAH)Veterans Health Administration, Veterans Integrated Service
Network (VISN10), Anchorage, AK. Responsibilities THIS IS NOT A
VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE
WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION This position
involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed below
represent the full performance level of GS-7. At the GS-5 grade
level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and
with less independence. You will progressively acquire the
background necessary to perform at the full performance level of
GS-7. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is
contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of
higher-level work, and availability of funds. Duties will include,
but may not be limited to the following: Personnel Security, e-QIP,
PIV, Use of Automated Integrated Systems: Processes of initiating,
reviewing, and approving background cases for release to the Office
of Personnel Management (OPM) in compliance with policies relating
to completion of suitability investigations for Federal employees
and others requiring background investigations for non-sensitive
and public trust positions. Collects appropriate background
information, tracking and reviewing data, completion of reports,
maintaining databases and processing follow-up actions on various
security related matters and assisting with suitability
adjudications. Reviews position risk sensitivity levels as full
assistant to the Personnel Security Specialist. Assembles position
descriptions and functional statements for the Personnel Security
Specialist for review. Tracks electronically the level assigned and
the appropriate background investigation needed. Initiates, reviews
and releases appointees background investigations in the Office of
Personnel Managements Electronic Questionnaires for Investigations
Processing (e-QIP) system or in conjunction with the VA-
Adjudication Center (VA-AC). Monitors the status of specific
pending items, compiles data to produce reports, follows up to
determine status and records results. Local Consultation, Performs
Audits, Maintains Privacy of Information, Reviews technical
regulations, policy, guidance: Presents training/briefings for
supervisors, managers, and employees related to various aspects of
the Personnel Security Program. Assures that paperwork related to
the suitability process is forwarded for inclusion in the
appropriate system of records, i.e., official personnel folders,
records related to fee basis employees, contract personnel,
volunteers, or without compensation employees. Maintains required
files related to the suitability process in accordance with
OPM/agency guidelines. Requests information from various law
enforcement agencies and courts. Assures that the approving
official is kept informed of these actions. Reviews applicant's
data ensuring that the submitted information matches the
demographic data and that all required information has been
provided. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 8:00am - 4:30pm

Information" below for details. Qualifications SPECIALIZED
EXPERIENCE GS-5: Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized
experience that equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and
abilities (KSA's) needed to successfully perform the duties of the
position and that is typically in or related to the position to be
filled? To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent
to at least the GS-4 level in Federal service. Specialized
experience includes: having knowledge of the organizational
structure, mission, goals and needs; understands regulations,
policies, procedures, principles and concepts that govern the
Personal Identity Verification Program; skilled especially in oral
communication in order to provide technical advice and guidance to
customers; has the ability to enter, extract, and evaluate employee
information via access to various computer databases; skilled in
dealing with highly charged emotional situation and have the
ability to work calmly and effectively in sensitive, stress
producing situations. OR SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE
GS-5 (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Successfully completed four (4) years
of education above the high school level in any field. This
education must have been obtained in an accredited business,
secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or
university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is
the normal prerequisite. One (1) year of full-time undergraduate
study is defined as thirty (30) semester hours, forty-five (45)
quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at
least twenty (20) hours of classroom instruction per week for
approximately thirty-six (36) weeks in a business, secretarial or
technical school. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) OR COMBINATION OF EDUCATION
AND EXPERIENCE GS-5 (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Equivalent combinations
of successfully completed post-high school education and
specialized experience may be used to meet total qualification
requirements. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE GS-6: Applicants must have one
(1) year of specialized experience which equipped you with the
knowledge, skill, and abilities to perform the duties of the
position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this

Additional Information Physical Requirements: The work is
sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work.
However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of
light items such as papers, small boxes, or books. Receiving
Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal
Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay
period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a
Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward
annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military
service experience. This credited service can be used in
determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit
must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is
