Job Description:


Field based Technical requiring hand/tool skills

Work in a team supporting junior and senior technicians, Engineers, Project Managers

Understanding of electronics and telephony equipment

Installation, modification and test, and turn-up procedures

Troubleshooting circuits, to include terrestrial, satellite, microwave circuits and equipment

Identifies and terminates various types of cable and wire to include coax, waveguide, data and power cables understanding industry standard color code

Support and install equipment racks, cabinets for central, remote, and field offices to include rack support pedestals, cable trays, bracing, etc.

Document of job specific as build changes to engineering instructions

Communicate with project engineers and project managers, complete preparation and testing of equipment

Coordination and directing of contract resources, i.e., installers, technicians, electricians, HVAC contractor.

This is an entry level position and must have a basic understanding of installation, modifications, and test procedures, electronics, and telephony equipment. Ability to support senior technicians, with equipment installation, test and turn up working under close supervision.

Essential Duties for this position:

90% Equipment Adds, Moves, Changes

  • Installation of non-service affecting equipment.
  • Service effecting equipment installation, test and turn-up in Anchorage, remote Alaska with occasional travel to the lower 48 states.
  • Installs of Central Office equipment racks and cabinets, rack support pedestals, cable trays, bracing, main distribution frames and fuse and power distribution panels.
  • Installs, identifies and terminates under supervision various types of cable and wire in various locations, including coax, waveguide, data and power cables including understanding of industry Installs of antennas, antenna foundations, towers, waveguide, ice bridges, grounding system, fences, and HVAC units.
  • Tests and turn-up of all equipment installed; troubleshooting technical issues as needed.

10% Documentation

  • Completion of job specific paperwork as directed.
  • Completion of company/department specific documents.

  • Requires basic understanding of electronics and telephony equipment.
  • Requires the ability to work with and provide assistance to higher-level technicians.
  • Knowledgeable of install, test, modify, and repair a wide range of Central Office, Remote Office and Field Office support equipment, including cabling, power distribution and grounding, framework, air handling controls, and alarm reporting systems.
  • Adept at using test equipment in the testing and troubleshooting of circuits and equipment.
  • Knowledgeable of proper installation practices, operation, testing, and troubleshooting of a wide range of telecommunications equipment including but not limited to: routers, hubs, satellite modems, protection switches and amplifiers, VSAT stations, microwave radio systems, Cisco routers and switches, M&C Equipment, DLC systems, channel banks, structured cabling systems, DACS systems, fiber-optic multiplexers, high-speed data circuits and equipment, and distributed data networks.
  • Demonstrated understanding of complex system documentation and the process of correctly installing a final product based on the documentation.
  • Basic understanding of AC and DC power systems, grounding in a Central Office environment and an understanding of general safety regulations, desired.
  • Possess a basic knowledge of fiber-optic, coax and network cable and telecommunications and electronic installation procedures.
  • Basic satellite antenna systems installation knowledge preferred.
  • Solid working knowledge of basic PC computer applications.
  • Basic understanding of current industry installation standards, (ie., Telecordia, Bicsi or equivalent)

Minimum qualifications:

  • Minimum of four years' experience as a Telecommunications Technician or related background required.
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate degree, Trade school, Military Technical School or equivalent required. In addition to minimum experience required, a combination of education and relevant work experience sufficient to perform the duties may be substituted with on a year for year basis.

Certifications: Industry specific certifications are highly valued and may contribute to required education.

Physical Requirements: Ability to perform sedentary work; physical effort may include stooping, kneeling, touching, feeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions; clarity of vision to see near, mid-range, and color; ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds following company safety procedures, however less weight more often.

Working Conditions: Work is performed at company's business location in an open spaced office environment with minimal privacy. Work schedule is 40 hour workweek and requires flexibility in hours, weekend and holiday work, after hour on call duties and occasional travel.

Tower Climber and Rescue certification will be required within three months of hire. GCI will provide current training for up to date safety certifications and employee must remain certified while in the position and must be able to climb tower heights of up to 150 feet.

v Drug Testing: Participation in a DOT or non-DOT drug and alcohol testing program may be required to satisfy conditions of a contract or proposed contract with a business partner or client. This includes: pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return to duty, and follow-up testing.

v Fitness For Duty: Ability to pass a pre-employment or return to work physical and fitness for duty examination may be required to satisfy conditions of a contract or proposed contract with a business partner or client.

The company and its subsidiaries operate in a 24/7 environment providing critical services to Alaskans and may need to respond to public health and safety matters or other business emergencies. Due to business needs employees may be contacted outside of the normal business hours to respond to the immediate emergency. You will be requested to provide an emergency after hours contact numbers.

Driving Requirements (if applicable): Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license, proof of insurance, and a satisfactory driving record.
