Job Description:

Providence is calling an Electrocardiographic (ECG) Technician (EKG, Variable, 0.0 FTE) to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska. In this position you will:

  • ECG PROCEDURES: Perform electrocardiographic exams, including 12-lead ECGs, Rhythm ECGs, monitoring of patients rhythm while physician does pacemaker checks/reprogramming, and monitoring of patient vital signs and oximetry readings. Responds immediately to all Code 99s. Is able to quickly perform 12 lead and Rhythm ECGs of good technical quality on patients who are frequently gravely ill or injured. Is able to prioritize tests to ensure that "stats" are done first and that outpatient wait time is kept to a minimum.
  • DOCUMENTATION: Enter correct patient and medication documentation on all electrocardiograms. Maintains departmental log book and patient files, including microfiche records and electronic files. Documents correct procedure notes on all post procedure electrocardiograms as well as in the departmental log book Documents any non-standard lead placement or patient positioning on electrocardiogram.
  • EQUIPMENT/SUPPLIES: Maintain stock levels and routine cleaning of machines/cables. Coordinates with Clinical Resource/Team Leader for supply equipment or repair needs. Ensures that all emergency equipment and supplies are available in the Stress room on a daily basis. Is able to reprogram ECG machine to satisfy physician requests for non-standard prints. Is able to troubleshoot problems with 12 lead equipment and department ECG storage systems.
  • PATIENT CHARGING: Accurately enters patient technical charges in billing system utilizing appropriate ICD9 codes. Accurately logs electrocardiogram reading physician information and enters appropriate professional fee billing information in the system utilizing appropriate ICD9 codes.
  • SAFETY/EDUCATION: Follow hospital standards for safety/BSI. Maintains current BLS certification. Keeps current on all assigned Health Stream courses. Makes continuing effort to increase knowledge of ECG interpretation to facilitate immediate physician notification of acute abnormalities. Takes advantage of seminars and classes provided by PAMC and studies to expand knowledge related to ECG interpretation and ECG Technician competencies.
  • COMMUNICATION / CUSTOMER SATISFACTION: Allow time to give/receive shift report each day. Communicates well with other personnel and physicians in regards to scheduling of procedures or distributing of test results and reports. Promotes positive image of PAMC and ECG Department to all patients and their families through words and actions. Is able to positively and effectively deal with patients, their families, physicians, and other hospital personnel in situations, which are frequently stressful and tense. Is able to effectively explain all ECG procedures to the patient and answer any questions they may have regarding the procedures.
  • Recognize and maintain confidentiality of all patient and employee information.
  • Maintain a work environment conducive to efficient department operation.
  • Participate and promote department quality improvement process.
  • Respond to real or simulated emergency and disaster situations according to hospital procedure.
  • Assist with departmental projects as assigned by the ECG Dept Supervisor.
  • Complete initial and annual Competency Plan for assigned job and department.

Required qualifications for this position include:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification upon hire
  • Good transcription and spelling skills
  • Typing and computer skills

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Two (2) years experience performing ECGs in an acute care hospital setting. On the job training may be considered for in-house candidates with a minimum of one year of direct patient care experience in an acute care setting.
