The Department of Administration, Public Defender Agency (PDA) is recruiting for a fulltime

Legal Advocate (Associate Attorney I) located in Anchorage, Alaska.

What you will be doing:

This is a non-attorney position. This position is the lead support staff position in the Civil section of the Agency's Anchorage office. This position provides high level litigation assistance and works directly with clients. Under the guidance of Agency attorneys, the position provides advocacy and support to clients by helping them locate and access services that aid them in successful completion of case plans or in preparing for litigation to reunify their families. This position also supervises one law office assistant and a paralegal in the section. A sample of the position's duties include interviewing treatment providers and witnesses, coordinating expert testimony for trial, and attending Office of Children's Services administrative meetings with clients.

The Sixth Amendment guarantees the right to counsel in many types of cases and the Public

Defender Agency is appointed by the Court to represent people who are unable to afford counsel

on their own. This position is an integral part of providing that representation and protecting our

clients' rights. You will work closely with attorneys and other Agency staff to acquire complete

records and transcripts, provide high-level assistance on litigation preparation, and communicate

with clients frequently in writing and over the phone. This position is essential to the success of

the division by providing advanced litigation and trial support and client services.

This important work helps improve case outcomes for individuals charged with crimes, helps re-unify families, and provides the foundation for successful re-entry into communities.

The office is located in downtown Anchorage near the Nesbett and Boney courthouses. The

hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM with an hour lunch at noon. The position

supports a team of ten attorneys under the direction of the Civil Division's Deputy Public

Defender, and supervises the section's paralegal and legal assistant.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Positions in this job class are in the Partially-Exempt service. Although there are not specific minimum qualifications, the following education or experience would be helpful:

  • A bachelor's degree or higher in areas such as social work, justice or legal studies, or psychology
  • Experience as a paralegal, social services specialist, protective services specialist, or extensive experience as a legal assistant or similar
  • Experience working with indigent populations, parties in child in need of aid cases, or vulnerable populations
  • Experience or skills interviewing individuals and comfort advocating or speaking on behalf of others
  • Experience supervising others
  • Knowledge of legal principles and practices; administrative and constitutional law, legal procedures, methods of legal research, and rules of evidence; criminal proceedings; journalistic procedures
  • Ability to conduct research projects, interview people, gather facts, analyze collective data and make recommendations; prepare concise but comprehensive records and reports; meet the public and maintain pleasant relationships; write speeches, scripts and news releases
