Job Description:

GCI's Senior Headend Technician is responsible for installing, testing, operating, maintaining and repairing earth station and headend equipment that receives, decodes, organizes and sends satellite-transmitted data to customers. Headend equipment includes satellite receivers, encoders, antennas, and signal processing and QAM and IP transmission electronics. Periodically tests equipment and quality of signal throughout the cable network. Support of CDN, servers, and Digital Video content.

Essential Duties:

Responsible to maintain and operate the company's Headend central office for the reception and distribution of cable networks/systems in a manner that maximizes availability and provides the highest quality of service for our customers. Maintains required logs, records, and other documentation in compliance with company and Federal Communications Commission technical requirements.

Demonstrates proficiency in and working knowledge of several areas of the headend function. Handles semi-routine operational duties, problems and repairs.

Operate and maintain of equipment within a cable/telecommunications headend/central office; install, maintain, and repair the necessary headend and signal distribution equipment; monitor the audio and video quality of services and troubleshoot potential problems.

Additional Job Requirements: This is an advanced level position within the Network Headend team. Required to have a high-level knowledge, experience, and understanding of Network, installation, modifications, and test procedures and considered the Subject Matter Expert in Headend functions and responsibilities. Ability to trouble shoot and anticipate possible problems and roadblocks analyze and resolve problems. Functions independently and supports, management, senior technicians and mentor junior technicians. Ability to execute the most complex equipment installation, test and turn up working under minimal to no supervision. Maintain operating the company's Headend systems in a manner that maximizes availability and provides the highest quality of service for our customers. Position requires on-call rotation and some off-shift work.

Essential Duties for this position:

40% Network configuration changes and new service additions. 30% Network troubleshooting and Corrective Maintenance. 15% Equipment Preventative Maintenance. 15% Respond to customer inquiries and troubleshoots.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

* Must have advanced broad-based knowledge and superior demonstrated troubleshooting experience with: * CATV RF signal analysis, combining, amplification, transport and distribution (forward and return path; broadcast/narrowcast) technologies. * IP networking and Ethernet transport. * Management of digital video asset files * Single Mode optical transport of RF, Audio/Video, data and digital video. * L-Band signal analysis, transport and distribution. * MPEG Transport Stream analysis and troubleshooting. * MPEG2 encoding (transport and program streams). * Installation & troubleshooting of mini-coax, CATV coax, balanced audio & CAT5 Ethernet * Computer system operation and management, remote access, VPN, SSH, Telnet, FTP, TFTP, BOOTP. Windows 2000/XP/Server2003; Basic Linux (SuSE, RedHat, Ubuntu) operations. Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to read and comprehend technical manuals and solve technical problems in a timely manner Ability to work independently, as a team and mentor peers.

Years of Experience required to meet minimum qualifications: Minimum ten years' relevant experience installing, testing, operating, maintaining and repairing headend equipment within a telecommunications headend/central office environment.

Level of Education required to meet minimum qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent required. Associates Degree in Telecommunications, Electronics, trade school, military training or equivalent training preferred. Or a combination of relevant work experience and/or education sufficient to perform the duties of the job may substitute to meet the total years required on a year-for-year basis.

Certifications: Industry specific certifications are highly valued and may contribute toward education.

Preferred Certification: SCTE/CCNA

Physical Requirements: Ability to perform sedentary work; physical effort may include stooping, kneeling, touching, feeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions; clarity of vision to see near, mid-range, and color; ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds following company safety procedures, however less weight more often.

Working Conditions: Inside/outside work; noise; standing; hot/cold temperatures; vibration; cramped quarters; upset customers, vendors or employees; travel; flexible schedules; overtime, weekend, holiday or before hours work, working at heights. May be exposed to adult video content and/or adult poster art that may occur if the functionality of the content needs to be verified. Position requires on-call rotation and some off-shift work.

The company and its subsidiaries operate in a 24/7 environment providing critical services to Alaskans and may need to respond to public health and safety matters or other business emergencies. Due to business needs employees may be contacted outside of the normal business hours to respond to the immediate emergency. You will be requested to provide an emergency after hours contact numbers.

Driving Requirements (if applicable): Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license, proof of insurance, and a satisfactory driving record.
