Position Summary: Prince William Sound College is seeking applicants for adjunct faculty positions. PWSC is part of the University of Alaska Anchorage which is independently accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). With its campus in Valdez and two extension centers in Cordova and the Copper Basin region, PWSC serves an expansive rural area in Alaska and delivers a significant amount of distance delivery in addition to tradition classroom instruction. Periodically, adjunct instructors are needed to support the Associate of Arts degree program, as well as many General Education Requirement courses of the college.PWSC provides instruction through a variety of formats and structures. Adjunct faculty often teach by distance delivery, either asynchronously through Blackboard or a similar platform, or synchronously with Collaborate or desktop video conferencing software. Those teaching in classrooms often connect to multiple sites by video for synchronous instruction, depending on the discipline and nature of the course. Additionally, adjunct instructors may be appointed to teach dual credit courses consisting entirely of secondary students who are eligible to complete college-level coursework, and appointment terms may reflect high school academic semester schedules.Need for adjunct instructors is determined on a per-semester basis. Successful acceptance into the adjunct pool does not guarantee an offer of a contract, though qualified applicants will be held in the pool for multiple semesters in the chance that a need for instructors in their discipline may arise.

POSITION DETAILSAdjunct FacultyTemporary Faculty CreditPrince William Sound CollegeValdez, Copper River Region, and CordovaJOB DUTIESDevelop and instruct each course as assigned, using the approved Course Content Guide's student learning outcomes, and to the specifications of contract terms and dates. Utilize didactic, engaging, and innovative teaching methods to deliver up-to-date content within the scope of the course. Practice adaptable instruction methods and interpersonal skills to reach students from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures in manners that best promote student success, engagement, and critical thinking -- incorporating collaboration and the exchange of ideas whenever appropriate and possible within the course. Utilize current technology to effectively engage students and enhance the teaching and learning experience. Meet the minimal contact hours for course instruction and comply with the published course schedule and the academic calendar of the college.Maintain evidence of students meeting the course's intended student learning outcomes with examples of assignments and records of student performance; work with the other faculty to compile the annual program report by contributing this and other course-level assessment data.Communicate effectively and in a timely manner with the Office of Academic Affairs (OAA), department lead/mentor faculty, and administrators of PWSC extension centers and high schools as needed for dual credit or extension site assignments. Submit a formal syllabus for each course to the Office of Academic Affairs prior to the start of the instruction period, using the general syllabus template with required content. Submit grades by the posted deadline in the academic calendar of the assigned semester. Adjunct instructors are expected to be highly responsive to students in correspondence, to utilize and check their UA email account for PWSC-related business, and to maintain published/posted office hours (whether delivered from an office on campus or availability for Skype sessions with distance students, etc). At least once at mid-term and additionally as needed, refer at-risk or failing students to Student Services for support and intervention to assist students in becoming more successful in the course, or in dropping/withdrawing. Address conduct problems, especially academic dishonesty, using formal college policies. Manage the learning environment to promote and protect the integrity, credibility, and quality of both the course(s) taught and of Instruction at PWSC as a whole.KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES/EXPERIENCE:Candidates will be evaluated on suitability of their academic qualifications, past teaching experience, and potential for providing high quality instruction to undergraduate students. Demonstrated subject expertise and experience relevant to teaching the specific course content is preferred. Candidates should be willing to work with distance delivery technologies such as Blackboard and videoconferencing equipment; preference will be given to applicants with experience in these areas. Preference will also be given to Alaskan residents or those residing in Alaska during the semester in which they intend to teach.At least one year of college instruction, preferably within the discipline of instruction, is strongly preferred, but applicants with no formal college-level teaching experience will be considered.A master's degree or higher from an accredited institution of higher education, is required for standard courses in the field the instructor is applying to teach. If applicant's master's degree is in a different field than applicable discipline, 18 minimum graduate credits in the specific instruction discipline must have been completed, with related professional experience in the field.--Successful applicants must provide official transcripts documenting academic credentials required for the position as a condition of employment.
