Job Description:

GCI’s Engineer II, Cloud Systems is responsible forthe Cloud Systems Engineering function. Works collaboratively with other CloudSystems Engineers, Cloud Network Engineers, DevOps Engineers, and IT functionsto develop, deploy, and maintain the organizations Hybrid Cloud & SDDCofferings. The Cloud Systems Engineer strives to achieve improved deploymentfrequency for faster time to market, shortened lead time between fixes, andquicker recovery time in the event of a new release failure. This is achievedthrough development of physical compute platforms supporting virtualizedworkloads, scaling efficient repeat-ability with Continuous Deliverymethodologies, and building out technology providing effective reliability.

Essential Duties of Position at all Levels:

Responsible for the design, implementation, andsupport of large-scale hybrid- and multi-cloud hosting platforms.

Automates and streamlines operations andprocesses to rapidly release reliable infrastructure faster and morefrequently.

Builds and maintains tools for deployment andtesting in stable and scalable production environments.

Job Qualifications at all Levels:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Requires a strong knowledge of agile methodologyand continuous integration and delivery.

Knowledge of virtualization platforms andassociated technologies including (but not limited to) the full VMWare stack(ESXi, vCenter, vSAN, NSX, and the vRealize Suite).

Understanding of configuration management andsoftware defined data center (SDDC) infrastructure.

Ability to work as a project team member.

Ability to develop/build IT solutions to meetbusiness requirements.

Ability to install and configure solutions.

Ability to translate business and technical requirementsinto test cases, test scenarios, and scripts.

Ability to develop and/or implement reusablecomponents.

Ability to perform script maintenance andupdates due to changes in requirements or implementations.

Adheres to standards and procedures.

Reviews modules for quality assurance.

Ability to deploy new modules, upgrades, andfixes to the production environment.

Assist in production support.

May troubleshoot existing IT systems to identifyerrors or deficiencies and develop solutions.

Documents functions and changes to new ormodified modules and test activities/results.

People Skills:

Ability to administer 24/7 server environments.

Active listening skills with the ability to workeffectively with technical and non-technical staff to resolve issues.

Additional Job Requirements:This is an advanced technical position requiring the ability to workindependently performing moderate to complex duties and in a team member roleworking under deadlines and operating constraints. Must have experience toprovide functional/ technical guidance; development and implementation ofsoftware defined infrastructure, automate tasks, and the following duties inaddition to previous:

Ability to work on moderate to complex tasks insupport of one or more projects with minimal supervision.

Ability to work independently on small projects.

Increased skill in multiple technicalenvironments

Creates and shares development estimates andoperational requirements to enable accurate planning with realistic timelines.

May serve as a liaison between client partners,IT, and vendors in coordination with project managers to provide technicalsolutions that address user needs.

Ability to analyze client operations tounderstand their strengths and weaknesses to uncover opportunities forimprovements.

Participates in integrating solutions with otherapplications and platforms outside the framework.

Codes and documents custom test automationframeworks.

Ability to document and complete knowledgetransfer to production support.

Works with Release Management to ensure modulesare production-ready.

Evaluate existing applications and platforms andprovide recommendations for improving performance.

Experience working with vendors to resolveproblems and develop solutions.

Participates in development of contingency plansincluding reliable backup and restore procedures.

Evaluates new application packages and tools.

Provides technical coaching and mentoring toless-experienced team members.

A minimum of four years’ experience required inany combination of the following:

Experience in Telecommunications or ComputerSciences/IT field.

Experience working in applications, systems, orIT operations.

Working knowledge and experience of two or morevirtualization platforms, in-depth knowledge of all components in avirtualization stack, or in-depth knowledge of VMWare Horizon.

Comfort with frequent incremental code, testing,and deployment.

Demonstrate strong organizational and timemanagement skills.

High School diploma or equivalent required.

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science,engineering or related field required.

In addition to minimum experience required,degree may be substituted with relevant work experience on a year-for-yearbasis.

Certifications: Industry specific certificationssuch as Dell DCAN DCPPE, and DEA series; VMWare VCP, VCAP, VCAP series; arehighly valued and may contribute toward education.

Physical Requirements:Visual acuity necessary to utilize a computer monitor throughout thecourse of a normal workday. Ability to perform repetitive keyboardingactivities and operate general office equipment. Must have the ability tocommunicate orally, both in person and over the telephone. Office Position:Ability to perform sedentary work.Physical effort may include stooping, kneeling, touching, feeling,reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking,hearing, and repetitive motions.Requires clarity of vision to see near, mid-range, and color.Ability to lift and carry up to 20 lbs.

Working Conditions: Work can be performed remotely inconjunction other team members in GCI offices in Anchorage, Seattle andPortland; during a normal 40-hour workweek and may require additional hours tomeet project goals or deadlines.Attendanceeither in person or via telecommuting technologies required during businesshours. Occasional travel for business and training purposes is required.

The company and its subsidiaries operate in a 24/7environment providing critical services to Alaskans and may need to respond topublic health and safety matters or other business emergencies. Due to businessneeds employees may be contacted outside of the normal business hours torespond to the immediate emergency. You will be requested to provide anemergency after hours contact numbers.

Driving Requirements (if applicable): Must possess andmaintain a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and a satisfactorydriving record.
