Job Description:
The Department of Corrections, Division of Health and
Rehabilitation Services, is recruiting for a Physician
Assistant/Advanced Practice Registered Nurse 1 position in multiple
locations, including: Spring Creek Correctional Center (SCCC)
located in Seward, Alaska; Hiland Mountain Correctional Center
(HMCC) in Eagle River, AK; and Goose Creek Correctional Center
(GCCC) located in Mackenzie Point, AK.

***The Department of Corrections is currently offering a hire
incentive bonus of up to $15,000.00. The incentive bonus will be
paid in two equal installments, minus mandatory deductions. The
first installment will be paid 90 calendar days after the first day
of employment, and upon demonstrating an overall mid-acceptable
performance rating. The second and final installment will be paid
upon the employee's successful completion of the probationary
period. Payments will be due within sixty (60) calendar days of
such request. To receive an incentive, employees are expected to
agree to a three-year term of employment with the Department of
Corrections.***
What you will be doing:
As a provider, you will care for the emergent, urgent and chronic
care needs of inmates assigned to correctional facilities in the
State of Alaska. You will act as the liaison between facility and
local physicians and hospitals, dealing directly with the
collaborating physician or as required with outside agencies on
treatment plans. You will prescribe Schedule II-V drugs as
appropriate in accordance with State licensing requirements and the
prescriptive authority by the Alaska Board of Nursing or the Alaska
Medical Board.

The Department of Corrections is constitutionally and statutorily
mandated to provide for the health and welfare of offenders
committed to the custody of AK DOC. In an ambulatory care setting,
the Division of Health and Rehabilitation Services (HARS) provides
essential healthcare in secure facilities that serve sentenced and
unsentenced offenders ages 16 and older. HARS also provides
infirmary care to offenders who are pre- and post-op or who have
medical conditions that require a higher level of care.

like with a highly flexible schedule. Coverage is needed in several
sites around Alaska. Travel to provide these services is covered by
the State of Alaska. The position has significant autonomy. With
the autonomy, the provider works with nurses, behavior health and
social work to provide overall care for the inmate. The provider is
never left alone; help from other providers is always available by
phone or in person.
The work environment you can expect:
The nursing staff and providers work in tandem to provide for the
medical care for inmates. Providers often work with another
advanced practice professional or physician. The nursing staff care
for the medical needs of the inmates within their scope through
protocols written by the chief medical officer.

Medicine and Dentistry: Knowledge of the diagnosis and treatment of
injuries, diseases, and deformities, including preventive
health-care measures.
Public Health: Applies knowledge of the concepts, principles,
theories, methods, and tools associated with protecting and
improving the health of people and their communities, including,
promoting healthy lifestyles, researching disease and/or injury
prevention, and/or detecting, preventing, and responding to
infectious diseases.
Technology Application: Uses machines, tools, instruments, or
equipment effectively; uses computers and computer applications to
analyze and communicate information in the appropriate format.
Teamwork: Encourages and facilitates cooperation, pride, trust, and
group identity; fosters commitment and team spirit; works with
others to achieve goals.
SPECIAL NOTE: SALARY
The starting salary for this position is dependent upon difficulty
in recruitment. Additionally, per Letter of Agreement, PA/APRN 1's
with the Department of Corrections are paid at one salary step
above the earned step.
Minimum Qualifications:
Eligibility for licensure to practice as a Physician Assistant or
Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in the State of Alaska.
Special Note:
Candidates not currently licensed by the State of Alaska, who
otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for licensure as a
Physician Assistant or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in the
State of Alaska may apply for vacancies in this job class.
Applicants qualifying under this option may receive a conditional
job offer; however, proof of licensure will be required prior to
final appointment and reporting for duty.
Some positions require the successful applicant to pass a
background investigation, including fingerprinting, as a
prerequisite to employment. These requirements will be indicated at
the time of recruitment.
Some positions require the successful applicant to provide proof
they are free from active pulmonary tuberculosis at the time of
hire. Employees may be required to be screened annually. These
requirements will be indicated at the time of recruitment.
Shift assignments and on-call availability may be required.
Some positions require application for and renewal of a DEA
Registration Number with various designation(s) from the United
States Drug Enforcement Administration allowing them to write
prescriptions for a variety of controlled substances as a
government health care provider. These positions will additionally
register with the Alaska Prescription Drug Monitoring Program.
In addition to maintaining Physician Assistant or Advanced Practice
Registered Nurse licensing requirements, some positions may require
maintenance of Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, Basic Life
Support, registration with a Prescription Drug Monitoring Program,
National Provider Identifier number, and others as appropriate.
