Description Providence is calling a Clinical Laboratory
Assistant Outreach (Family Medicine Center, Day Shift, 1.0 FTE, 40
hours per week) to Providence Physician Service Organization in
Anchorage, Alaska. We are a community of caregivers delivering
every day on our Mission to provide compassionate care that is
accessible for all - especially those who are poor and vulnerable.
In this position you will:
- SPECIMEN COLLECTION AND HANDLING: Collects and labels capillary
or venipuncture specimens according to established procedure as
well as labels urine and swabs according to procedure. Explains
collection procedure clearly to patient and properly identifies
patient prior to collection. Handles requests for special services,
i.e. Codes, STAT and Timed draws, prudently and efficiently.
- PROCESSING: Aliquots and stores blood specimens in appropriate
containers and at proper temperatures to assure integrity for
testing. Measures, aliquots, and prepares urine and body fluid
specimens for testing. Operates and maintains centrifuge for
preparing lipemic specimens for testing. Works closely with Send
Out personnel to assure quality of specimens for reference
laboratory testing. Troubleshoots / researches physician orders to
ensure accurate order entry of procedures requested. Maintains
appropriate fridge/freezer temps according to procedure. Ensures
ABN's are processed per protocol.
- DOCUMENTATION AND DATA ENTRY: Understands and adheres to all
compliance related procedures. Assures validity of edited test
orders and ad on testing. Labels specimens accurately and timely.
Documents appropriately in the electronic medical record
system.
- CLIENT RELATIONS: Maintains a clean, professional personal
appearance. At all times conducts himself/herself in a professional
manner as a representative of PFMC. Must possess the ability to
deal tactfully with personnel, clients, and the general public.
Cooperates closely with Client Services, other laboratory personnel
as well as providers and staff in the clinic. Receives incoming
laboratory calls. Assists callers with specimen requirements, and
other information as able. Directs calls or pages calls to
appropriate staff members or pathologists.
- COMMUNICATION AND TEAM WORK: Uses clear and concise verbal and
written communication with staff and the public. Builds effective,
supportive relationships with co-workers and laboratory customers.
Uses positive interpersonal skills to promote success of team
members and promote lab goals. Assists other personnel as needed
without being asked. Completes pay records and personnel forms
accurately and correctly. Willing to be flexible when asked to
participate in clinic projects.
- QUALITY CONTROL / QUALITY IMPROVEMENT: Performs quality
control, quality improvement, specimen tracking, and maintenance
procedures as required for shift responsibilities. Contributes
accurate statistics or information to the Lab Services QI processes
as requested. Notifies customers or clients of unacceptable
specimens, arranges for recollection. Volunteers for additional
responsibility to assist supervisor. Accurately documents follow-up
on client complaints in a timely manner. Participates in quality
projects when asked. Maintains CLIA waived status.
- SAFETY AND EDUCATION: Complies with all Laboratory and PFMC's
safety policies and procedures. Adheres to PFMC's biohazard waste
program. Maintains clean, well stocked working area and phlebotomy
room.
- PROBLEM SOLVING / CRITICAL THINKING: Uses good judgment and
common sense in making decisions. Accepts responsibility for
decisions and learns from incorrect judgments. Demonstrates
creativity to solve problems within scope of responsibility. Takes
the lead in troubleshooting specimen problems for the area. Refer
situations deviating from standard protocol to manager.
- PRECEPTOR: Serves as mentor or preceptor for new employees or
staff during their orientation period. If delegated, responsible
for signing off new employee checklists. Aids supervisor and Lead
CLA in developing orientation checklists and competencies.
- Completes initial and annual Competency Plan for assigned job
and department. Required qualifications for this position include:
- H.S. Diploma or GED
- Phlebotomy certification from NCA, ASCP, NCCT, AMT, or other
comparable certification such as from the military, Emergency
Medical Technician (EMT), Certificate in Community Health
(Community Health Aid), or Mobil Intensive Care Paramedic (MICP) is
required at hire or within 12 months after hire date
- Valid driver's license
- 2 years Phlebotomy experience or one year phlebotomy experience
in a clinical setting.
- Less than one year experience will be considered for PAMC Lab
employees of six months or greater with approval from Director
