Description RN - Wound, Ostonomy, Continence Nursing (WOCN)
Providernce Alaska Medical Center The WOCN is a staff registered
nurse who functions independently within a flexible hospital-wide
practice realm. The WOCN applies knowledge drawn from a broad
in-depth education in the social and physical sciences in assessing
planning ordering providing, delegating, and teaching of patients
undergoing radical bowel and bladder surgical procedures to promote
the patient's return to a condition of optimal health and
independence. The WOCN is responsible for developing the
evidence-based expertise of the nursing staff in acute direct-care
situations as well as in assessing the educational needs of ostomy
patients and their families and the nursing staff caring for them.
The WOCN also functions as an educator and consultant for community
outreach programs directed to the care of persons with ostomies.
The WOCN scope of practice includes in-patient and out-patient
management of continence and ostomy care, preoperative site marking
and teaching and post-operative education and discharge teaching.
The Certified (Wound) Ostomy Nurse is a registered nurse with
additional training and certification, who functions independently
and collaboratively within a flexible in hospital and outpatient
setting. They apply knowledge based on evidence-based education and
practice. Their scope of practice includes pre and post-surgical
teaching for urostomy, ileostomy, colostomy, fistula care and
percutaneous tube skin care. They are able to create age
appropriate treatment plans and provide education to clients, their
support people and other healthcare professionals. Required
qualifications:
- Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree
- Coursework/Training and Must be a graduate of an accredited
school of Wound, Ostomy and Continence Program
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of
Alaska
- Must be Board Certified in the areas of Wound within 12 months,
Ostomy within 6 months and Continence Nursing within 12
months.
- Basic Life Support
- 2 years of RN experience Preferred qualifications:
