graduate school. Learning Assistants (LAs) are UAA students who
support, guide, and assist fellow students in high demand courses.
LAs are embedded in ‘gateway’ courses that are critical for
students to progress in their chosen degree path. Gateway courses
require students to demonstrate comprehension of course material so
that they are prepared to complete other major requirements. LAs
help students in these courses articulate, defend and modify their
ideas by facilitating conversations, discussions, and in-class
activities. LAs work closely with their Lead Faculty (the faculty
member teaching the course the LA is assigned to) and attend
onboarding and training with other LAs. LAs are employees of the
Learning Commons which is the home of many free peer learning
services including tutoring, coaching, and more. Available courses
change every semester. In Spring 2026 there may be availability in:
ECON, MATH, WRTG, BIOL, PSY, and more. Learning Assistants
facilitate discussions, group work and in-class activities among
groups of students in a variety of classroom settings that
encourage active engagement. This position works hand-in-hand with
faculty in order to help fellow students succeed in specific
courses. Learning Assistants must attend an orientation and
participate in ongoing training with their fellow Learning
Assistants. In addition to in-class time, Learning Assistants may
also support students in their LA course outside of class time with
additional duties such as holding exam study sessions, office hours
and more. ? A successful candidate for this position should: ? Be
reliable, dependable, committed, and able to attend and participate
in all shifts, meetings, and trainings ? Have the ability to
effectively communicate and work well with students, peers, staff,
and faculty ? Be willing to learn, give and receive feedback, and
have a growth mindset ? Be eager to support their peers and help
them learn without simply providing answers ? Be a positive,
encouraging, and supportive academic model for students in class As
a Learning Assistant you will: ? Attend and participate in the
course classes and/or labs where you are assigned ? Attend and
participate in required Learning Commons orientation, trainings and
meetings ? Meet with Lead Faculty and LAs from the same course ?
Perform other duties as assigned by the LA Program Director or Lead
Faculty Some experience tutoring, coaching, teaching, mentoring or
working well with others is preferred. Typically, a successful LA
has previously passed the course or taken similar courses to the
one they are an LA for. Minimum Qualifications: ? Must be enrolled
at UAA with a minimum of six (6) credit hours in the semester of
employment ? Must have completed at least one semester at UAA ?
Must be in good disciplinary standing with the university ? Must
have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher for this position Upon hire,

Details: This position is located at the University of Alaska
campus in Anchorage. This is a Student Assistant 2 position,
part-time up to 20 hours a week with starting pay $17.19 an hour.
This is a pooled position, which means that the position remains
open over the entire academic year. * This recruitment is open to
undergraduate students only. This position is hiring for the Spring
2026 semester, beginning in early January 2026. Special
