The Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Alaska Anchorage (**************************** seeks to hire a tenure-track faculty member at the assistant professor rank in the fields of mineral resources, petrology, or volcanology, with a start date of August 2020. We aim to expand and complement existing areas of research expertise in the Department which include geochemistry, structural geology, stratigraphy, petroleum geology, geophysics, hydrogeology, paleoclimatology, and planetary geology. The successful candidate is expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses to a diverse student body in the B.S. and M.S. programs in geological sciences. Job Summary: Mineral Resources/Petrology/Volcanology, University of Alaska Anchorage We encourage applications from individuals with expertise in one or more of the following areas: mineral resources or economic geology; structure and emplacement of ore deposits; igneous or metamorphic petrology; or volcanology. Regardless of the specific research discipline, the teaching expectations for this position may be variable but will include at the undergraduate level mineralogy, igneous and metamorphic petrology, and ore deposits, and may include geological field methods or field camp and volcanology. Graduate level courses will include mineral resources and advanced igneous petrology and may include other courses in support of the Department's teaching needs. We seek applicants with a commitment to teaching, research, and partnership building with resource industries and research organizations in Alaska and elsewhere. Successful candidates must develop externally funded research that actively involves graduate and undergraduate students. The position requires a Ph.D. in geological sciences or a related field at the time of initial appointment, university teaching experience or potential, and demonstration of research experience and future potential. Relevant industry or post-doctoral experience will be considered favorably. Ability to represent the department in the university. Required Experience: Evidence of a potential for successful teaching, service, and research activity. Industry or postdoctoral experience relevant to the advertised position will be beneficial. Typical Education or Training: Ph.D. in Geological Sciences or closely related discipline is required and must be conferred by August 1, 2020. Assignment Information: Tenure-track, Assistant Professor, 9 months per year, salary commensurate with experience and academic preparation.
