Position Summary:This is the Arts & Entertainment Reporter position
at The Northern Light, the student newspaper at the University of
Alaska Anchorage. This position is up to 20 hours/week and the
salary is $10.50/hour.
Job Posting Summary:
The Northern Light is a University of Alaska Anchorage student
multimedia news publication, funded by both student media fees and
advertising revenue. A digital-first source, The Northern Light
updates with timely web and multimedia content. The Northern Light
is distributed on Tuesdays during the academic year and summer.
Arts & Entertainment (A&E) reporters are responsible for
creating content for a designated section. The (A&E) reporter
will: serve as a writer for the section; compile, edit and write
specialized material for weekly fixtures and columns, and; prepare,
develop and repackage section content for use in a variety of media
at The Northern Light. They will assist the (A&E) editor and
develop stories that engage audiences with unique and interesting
stories. The ideal candidate must be a team player who can tell
accurate, fair and entertaining stories across platformsprint,
online, social and new mediaand can motivate others to do the same.
They will: learn the responsibilities of the (A&E) editor; meet
and enforce all deadlines; attend staff meetings, and; be receptive
of appropriate feedback regarding work for the newspaper and
complete other duties as assigned. This position reports with
frequent direct supervision to the (A&E) editor.
Applicant must possess excellent verbal written skills, demonstrate
an ability to write and edit publishable articles or columns with
attention to grammar, The Associated Press style, spelling,
clarity, accuracy and thorough reporting; be able to prepare,
develop, and / or repackage features content for use in other
media; be familiar with word processing and Macintosh computers;
and have knowledge of news gathering techniques, the First
Amendment, the Freedom of Information Act and media ethics.
Reporters are expected to complete two stories a week.
REQUIRED EDUCATION OR TRAINING:
Writing experience and strong English skills.
To be eligible for student employment, an applicant must:
a. Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of
six credit hours in the current semester of employment; or
b. Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit
hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours
in the next semester for employment between semesters; and
c. Have at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA), be in
good academic standing, or have approval from the MAU Senior
Student Services officer or his/her designee.
d. Students enrolled in non-traditional programs of study will be
considered eligible for student employment with the approval of the
Senior Student Services officer.
e. An applicant must provide evidence of enrollment as outlined
above to substantiate employment eligibility.
f. Position reappointment is contingent upon successful progress
toward degree completion and performance evaluation.
