Job Description:

Under supervision this position reviews applications and makes determination for financial assistance.


  • Screens all financial assistance applications for completeness and adherence to financial assistance and charity policies.
  • Screens patients and guarantors for third party resources and other payer sources.
  • Assists patients and guarantors to apply for government programs to cover health care expenses.
  • Works closely with staff in facilities across the Alaska Region to facilitate financial assistance and charity for Providence patients.
  • Reviews billing information to ensure that the billing priority is correct. Identifies and researches payer resources that may take precedence over personal insurance (liability coverage verses medical coverage).
  • Verifies and obtains benefit levels from insurance carriers when applicable. Ensures that all available payer resources are secured and applied to charges.
  • Maintains appropriate documentation, both written and electronically.
  • Is knowledgeable and maintains current up to date information on government entitlement programs such as Medicare Part A, B, C and D, Medicaid, Disability, VA, etc. as they apply to long term care and other resident services. Assist residents and their representative with the enrollment process as needed to ensure timely and accurate payments to facility.
  • Assists patients and guarantors with the financial assistance application/process as needed.
  • Responsible to obtain and keep current with the necessary knowledge and experience to perform job tasks in compliance with federal, state and local laws, regulations and guidelines.
  • Responsible to obtain and keep current with PH&SA policy on charity/financial assistance.
  • Responsible for expanding knowledge base through utilization of continuing education and other appropriate learning experiences.
  • Is knowledgeable and has excellent computer skills to navigate through a variety of software systems to gain and use financial and other information necessary to perform job tasks and complete financial services.
    Required qualifications:

  • 2 years experience in Medical Office or Patient Access department
  • Experience with State and Federal entitlement programs such as Public Assistance, Adult Public Assistance, Medicare, Medicaid, VA, etc.
